The Effect of pedagogical Agents' Instructional Roles onLearners with Different Ability Levels: A Measure on Learners' Achievement and Intrinsic Motivation

This article is about effect of different instrutional roles of pedagogical agent towards the achievement and intrinsic motivation of learners with different ability levels. Learning in computer enviroment is interactive, interesting, motivating, effective and may influence the expectations of the learner.

Pedagogical Agents :

            - designed to facilitate and support human learning

            - it is done by interacting with learners in an

            - interactive computer-mediated learning

            enviroment.

            - serves as a cognitive and communicative tool with

            lots of information.

            Roles of Pedagogical Agents :

          • - agent as cognitive tool

          • - as learning companion

          • - as mentor

The Expert are :

  • people who exhibit mastery in spesific area, skill or knowledge.

  • show extensive knowledge, perform better than average.

  • Confident, stable in performance, firm in emotion by internal and external conditions

  • development of expertise and requires years of practice

The Mentors are :

  • experienced and trusted advisor

  • guidance provider and not just give information to bridge the gab between the current and desired skill levels.

  • the people who will demonstrate to competence to the learners.

  • people who develop a social relationship to motivate the learners.

Individual Differences and Computer -Based Instruction.

        - each individual perform differently in the computer-mediated learning

        enviroment

        - multimedia learning is advantage for high -ability learners and vice

versa for those low-ability and concrete operational students.

Study 1

Investigation carried out to find the effectiveness of instructional roles of

the pedagogical agent to optimize the learning outcomes for learners with

different ability levels. Design and develop the pedagogical agents with

instructional role and intergrates the pedagogical agents into a learning

management system.

Study 2

Experiment carried out to exmine the impact of the different pedagogical agents

with different ability levels. Variables to be measured are achievement and

motivation score.

The purpose of the study is to identify the effective instructional role of the

pedagogical agent which can optimize learning in multimedia learning

enviroment.

  • RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

  • Study 1

  • The result shows that learners who used the mentor agent did perform significantly better compare to learners who used the expert-agent in the achievement score.

  • High-ability learners shows no significant difference in the achievement score when Mentor Agent and Expert-Agent are being used. Low-ability learner shows better significant when mentor agent is being used. Whereas low ability learners shows less achievement score when expert agent is being used.

  • The instructional role of the pedagogical agent does not influence the achievement of the high ability learners. Whereas it plays an important role in enhancing optimizing the knowledge constructions of the low-ability learners.

High ability learners performed significantly better compare to low-ability learners when using either expert-agent or mentor- agent

    Study 2

The analysis shows that learners who used the mentor-agent did perform significantly better compared to learners who used the expert-agent in the mean motivation score. The learners were more motivated when they interact with the mentor-agent as it provides motivation words and encouragements in the communication.

  • High -ability learners did not show any significant difference in the mean motivation score between learners who used the mentor agent and expert agent. The instructional role does not influence the high-ability learners on their intrinsic motivation. The performance of low-ability learners with mentor agent were better compared to the low-ability learners using expert-agent in mean motivation score. Mentor also plays an important role in boosting the low-ability learners to sustain in the learning tasks.

  • High-ability learners perform better in the mean motivation score compared to the low-ability learners when using expert-agent.Both ability learners shows equally motivated with the mentor-agent.

  • Conclusion

The results support the hypotheses.Learners who used the mentor-agent generally performed better compared to learners who used expert-agent in both mean achievement score and mean motivation score.Mentor-agent does not influence on enhance the performance of the high-ability learners, as compared to the expert-agent. Mentor-agent benefit the low-ability in boosting the learning outcomes on achievement and intrinsic motivation aspects. The instructional role of pedagogical agent in a multimedia instruction to be designed and developed as a mentor to benefit more individuals with different ability levels.
